I received orders to go to Korea on Sep 01. That was not one assignment I was looking forward to. I was happy with my unit 2-505th PIR. I was the Schools NCO for the BN and had a great group of friends within the Battalion and outside the Army. Unfortunately the Army does not take in consideration nothing else other than were they need you at the time so I packed my bags. Korea turn out to be the closing chapter in my 12 years of service. It was a long year in which I met a great group of NCOs, soldiers and friends.
When I reported to Korea I was immediately assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division. Usually that is where all Infantry soldiers end up. I was sent to Camp Greaves north of the bridge that guard the main land from the DMZ. This bridge is actually rigged with explosives and ready to be destroyed at anytime in case of an attempt by North Korea to invade South Korea.
The bridge was manned by a guard force of soldiers from the US and also soldiers from the South Korean Army. The guards were rotated every 24 hours. It was one of the worst details to have since you had to stay there all day checking and verifying the ID of every vehicle and that got be pretty boring after a while.
Like all the Army Camps in Korea Camp Greaves was very small. There was not much of nothing in it. We had a library (which closed for renovations for a long time), a small church, a bowling alley, a mini PX for the soldiers essentials, a gym, a building that contains a small food shoppette, barber shop and cleaners all together, and off course a Camp Bar known as the NOTRI short for North Of The River Inn.
The NOTRI without saying was one of the most frequented destinations on Camp. It was the only place where you could go with your friends and have some pretty decent food and a beer without having to go out of the Camp to one of the small Korean cities nearby. Since we had no females or Military Police on the Camp for the most part GI's went there got drunk and nobody fuzzed about it. Most people were functional alcoholics where they work during the day and as soon as last formation took place
